Rock Star Rhythms at Woodlands: Jeff Rich Hosts Drumming Masterclass for Year 3–6

On Monday 2nd June, Woodlands had the incredible privilege of welcoming rock legend Jeff Rich, former drummer of Status Quo, to lead an exciting drumming masterclass for our Year 3 to Year 6 pupils.
From the moment Jeff stepped into the hall, the energy was electric. Children were captivated as he shared stories from his time on tour and introduced them to a wide variety of percussion instruments from around the world. With rhythms echoing through the school, pupils not only got to watch a professional drummer in action but had the chance to become performers themselves, and they absolutely rose to the occasion.
The workshop was packed with fun and hands-on learning. The children clapped, tapped, banged and drummed their way through the session, showing brilliant focus, teamwork and enthusiasm.
Drumming isn’t just fun, it’s great for developing coordination, listening skills, and emotional expression. For many children, it was the first encounter with live drumming at this level, and it left a lasting impression.
It was fantastic to see the children so immersed in music. Jeff was inspirational and he made percussion come alive in a way that was fun, inclusive and exciting. Music like this builds confidence and gives pupils a creative outlet that supports their wider learning.
I had so much fun! We learned how to keep a rhythm and how different drums make different sounds. It felt amazing to play along with everyone at school. My favourite drum was the African talking drum.
We are incredibly grateful to Jeff for sharing his talent and passion with our pupils. It was an unforgettable experience and judging by the smiles and air-drumming all afternoon, we may have a few future rock stars in the making!
