Year 6 Hosts Bank of England Chief Cashier for Banknote Workshop!

Excitement filled the air in Year 6 on Thursday 10th July, as we had a very special visitor: Victoria Cleland, the Chief Cashier at the Bank of England!

Victoria's visit was part of a fascinating workshop designed to teach our children about the vital role of the Bank of England and to gather their valuable input for the public consultation on new banknote designs.

Our budding economists and artists had been busy preparing. They delved into the intriguing world of banknote design, researching the key criteria that new notes must meet. This included considerations for security features, durability, accessibility for all users, and how the designs reflect British culture and history. Armed with this knowledge, each child then unleashed their creativity, producing their very own imaginative banknote designs, complete with intricate details and thoughtful symbolism.

During the workshop, Ms. Cleland captivated the class with insights into the Bank of England's work. She explained how the Bank works to keep our economy stable, control inflation, and support businesses across the country, ensuring money keeps flowing smoothly. The children were particularly interested in learning about how the Bank helps to protect our money and maintain public trust in the currency. Ms. Cleland also shared some behind-the-scenes glimpses into the process of creating and issuing banknotes, from initial concept to circulation.

A key part of the session involved the children presenting their banknote designs and discussing the criteria they had considered. Ms. Cleland was incredibly impressed with their innovative ideas and the depth of thought behind each design. Their feedback and creative contributions will now be fed into the ongoing public consultation, giving our Year 6 students a real voice in the future of our currency.

It was a truly inspiring and educational experience for everyone involved. The children left the session with a much deeper understanding of the Bank of England's work and the complex process behind the money we use every day.

Here's what our children had to say:

Victoria showed us a picture of the gold bars that The Bank of England have. It was so cool!

I loved the experience, and we got given a pack of shredded old bank notes, even some £50 notes!

I didn't realise what The Bank of England did! I also learned that a £100million note is called a 'Titan!'

A huge thank you to Victoria Cleland. and The Bank of England, for such an engaging and memorable workshop!
