What's on in Harehills?

On Friday 15th December, Year 5 and 6 took part in a Spelling Bee!
Children from each class signed up to take part, and had to come to the front of the hall and spell some moderate words in round 1. Those children who spelt them correctly then moved on to round 2!
In round 2, children had to spell a word from our high challenge list! Some of these words included: camouflage, disastrous, chronological and connoisseur.
In the final surprise round, the remaining spellers were given the task of spelling words that were not on the practice lists; they had to spell the names of cities from around the world!
This year, we took our Reception, KS1 and KS2 children to the pantomime! OH YES WE DID!
A pantomime is a type of musical comedy stage production designed for family entertainment. It was developed in England and is performed throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland and in other English-speaking countries, especially during the Christmas and New Year festive season.
On Thursday, Year 1 and Year 3 went to the Carriageworks Theatre to see Snow White! The children had a fantastic time and some were even brave enough to get up on stage and win some prizes!
You can find out more about the other year groups' trips to see Snow White here.
This week, 6PH have been taking part in their Focus Week with Into University! They've been completing a secret mission to show what they have learnt about Ancient Greece and will graduate today at the University of Leeds!

Every day your child attends school, they will earn money to spend in our Pop-Up Shop! This is something the children have asked for and have promised they are going to try their hardest to be at school every day.
If your child is in school every day until the end of term, they can earn up to £10 to spend at the shop. This will be reduced if they have a day off.
We are mindful that some absences are authorised and therefore the children will not lose out. For example, an illness supported by medical proof of a GP appointment or a visit to a pharmacy, a hospital appointment if we have proof of the day and time of the appointment etc.
Children will have less to spend if they have an unauthorised absence, for example, illness with no proof of medical appointments, days off school with no explanation, holidays in term time, arriving to school late etc.
The children are very excited about spending lots of money in the shop, and they need your support to ensure they can be in school every day!
Co-op Academies are working with Mission 44, a charity set up by Lewis Hamilton, to support inclusion of students from ethnic minority groups. Part of our work has been to set up a team to support Roma children and families feel more included.
Albert, Mirela and David will be coming to Woodlands on Tuesday 4th December to meet you all!
Our children in Years 2 - 6 will be starting their R.S.E. units next week. If you'd like to know more, you can find some resources on the PSHE page of our website here, you can speak to your child's class teacher, or give us a call.
Dear Parents/Carers,
On Wednesday 29th November there will be a parents' consultation meeting in the Community Room between 2:30-3:00pm.
The aim of the meeting is to provide parents/carers with information in regard to the upcoming RSE units for Years 2-6. There will be opportunities to ask questions, find out more about our RSE curriculum, as well as a chance to look at some of the resources that we use.
For anyone that is unable to attend, the materials used will be shared on our school website.
Yours sincerely,
Miss Pinch and Mrs Hopkins
On the 26th and 27th of September, Co-op Academy Woodlands was inspected by Ofsted.
The inspectors carried out their inspection over the two days, which included deep dives into various subjects, lesson visits, discussions with staff and pupils, meetings with school leaders and scrutiny of work undertaken by children. They met with the headteacher, deputy headteacher, members of the governing body, other external agencies, spoke with parents, and reviewed documentation provided by the school. More of what inspectors looked at can be found within the official report which can be found here.
The inspectors concluded that Co-op Academy Woodlands is GOOD in all areas (Quality of Education, Behaviour and Attitudes, Personal Development, Leadership and Management and Early Years Provision), resulting in an Overall Effectiveness of GOOD for the school.
We are very proud of everyone in Team Woodlands for what they do, every day for our children and families and hope you share this feeling too.

In our RESPECT Assembly this week, we handed out our first ever High Flyer awards! These prestigious awards are given each half-term, for children who have shown our RESPECT values, have challenged themselves and had success! We are so proud of them.
Mrs Clark, Mr Trower and Miss Price are on the lookout for the next round of High Flyers!

This week, 6A have been taking part in their Focus Week with IntoUniversity. The staff at school and from IntoUniversity were impressed with the children's engagement and focus. Keep your eyes peeled for the full story next week!

Dear Parents and Carers,
The photographer will be at school on Friday 10th November.
If anyone would like their children to be photographed together, this will take place in the hall from 8.30 - 9.00am. We are only offering this to siblings who attend Co-op Academy Woodlands this year due to the amount of time it takes, as well as trying to restrict numbers on site. All other children that attend our school will have their photographs taken throughout the day.
Please make sure they come to school in uniform on this day.
Parents and carers of nursery children who don’t attend on a Friday are invited to have their children’s photo taken between 9.15 - 9.45 in the school hall.
Not only can you order these photos to have at home and share with your friends and family, we use them on our internal school system to make sure every child can be identified.
If you have any questions, please call the office.
Yours sincerely,
Adele Clark
Headteacher
We have had a fantastic first half-term of the school year, with our children making us so proud each and every day. Thank you to our parents and families for their engagement and support this half-term, and a massive thank you to our staff for their hard work and dedication.
We hope everyone in #TeamWoodlands has a safe and restful half-term.
Coming to school every day allows your child to get the best possible education. We’ll work with you, to help your child attend as much as they can. We’ve got a great attendance team, so please get in touch if you’re having difficulties.

The School Photographer will be in school on Friday 10th November. Make sure your children are in full school uniform, ready to show off their brightest smiles!
More information will be shared with you after half-term.
Although serious vision problems during childhood are rare, routine eye checks are offered to young children to identify any problems early on. Free NHS sight tests are also available at opticians for children under 16.
The sooner any eye problem is found, the sooner you and your child will be able to get any treatment and support needed. Children may not realise they have a vision problem so, without regular tests, there’s a risk a problem may not be spotted. This may affect their development and education.
If you have any concerns about your child’s vision, please book an appointment with an optician.
Goldwyn Opticians are located on Harehills Lane and larger opticians in the city centre, such as Boots and Vision Express. Where possible, please book appointments outside of school hours.
You can also discuss your concerns with a member of our Pastoral team. Pop in or give us a call.
